Leadership of the Holy Cross Institute

Taught by the Brothers of Holy Cross at St. Anthony High School, Long Beach, Brother Stephen Walsh, CSC, went on to earn a BA in history at St. Edward’s University and a PhD in curriculum and instruction at the University of Texas at Austin. His educational career has spanned teaching, administration, board service and consulting at all levels, including the presidency of St. Edward’s from 1972 to 1984. Before his appointment as executive director of Holy Cross Institute, he served as assistant provincial of the South-West Province, primarily working with the schools sponsored by the Province.

Leading by listening. Beginning spring 2005, Brother Stephen visited each Holy Cross secondary and middle school, meeting with faculty members, students and administrators. They expressed common desires for:

  • forging close relationships
  • accepting students as they are
  • celebrating diversity
  • striving for wholeness

These reflections serve as the groundwork for continuing conversations at the Inaugural Convocations of the Holy Cross Institute in March 2006.

Vision. “Those who have taught know how different the experience is when a student discovers an answer — when he or she truly ‘gets it’ — and when he or she is simply giving an answer. To discover something for oneself requires inquisitive exploration. It is the stories of our experience that validate [Moreau’s treatise on] Christian Education and not Moreau’s words that validate the experience. Look to yourself: just as you do with your students,
I urge you to begin where you are. Listen to yourselves, you are telling
that story.”
